There are so many reasons that I’m excited about Williams’ solo releases and the fact that they’re all synthy, experimental style songs is a big part of it.
Listening to this song for the first time was like being transported back in time to the 80’s. That synth comes in for that first chorus and it’s just pure 80’s pop-dance vibes all over the place.
Can you tell I love this song yet?
We can sit here and talk about what a great message this song has but considering how much darkness and anger was in the previous EP, check out my review of Petals for Armor I if you want, I think there’s something else going on here.
At least for me, this sounds like someone trying to convince themselves to break away from that darkness and find a way to be an active part of their life again. It’s like that little voice in your head that tells you “if you just get out of bed you’ll feel better”. It accounts for the repetition in the song because it’s more of a “if you say it enough times it will come true” thing, which I totally get.
I could also be projecting my own thoughts and experiences onto it so think whatever you want.
This might be an unfair hit but this isn’t Williams’ best work in a couple of key ways.
First, it doesn’t show what an amazing singer and musician she is. Sure, the vocals are solid and the instrumentation is a lot of fun–capturing that retro vibe with ease. But it’s no master piece and while it brings me joy, it doesn’t get to my heart like some of her other music does. Even more recent releases from her solo stuff can do that.
Second, it’s lyrically pretty straightforward. Now, Williams is not one to pull punches when it comes to lyrics–she says what she feels and means it–but as someone who doesn’t like anthem-style songs, it just feels a little flat. I can forgive the repetition only because I interpret a reason for it within the context of the song. It just would have been nice to see some more depth.
This is an amazing song and I will continue to bop along to it–even if I don’t follow the workout video Williams made–and it always puts a smile on my face.
I hope Williams continues to release new stuff because I’ve really been impressed with what she’s been doing so far.
