‘Wayne’ by Des Rocs [Song Review]

I’ve always enjoyed a certain amount of chaos in my music. I think it probably has something to do with how much I hate loud noises. I know that probably seems counter-intuitive but hear me out.

Music, especially punk and rock music, has a controlled chaos to it. It’s loud but with a specific purpose. Whereas, a crowd of people are just loud and trying to be heard above everything else. The noise increases as each person fights to say their piece.

Loud and chaotic music was the easiest way for me to block that out and not get overwhelmed.

So when I find a new artist that fits into this sound I hold so dear, I get really excited. Like, I will listen to everything they’ve ever written kind of excited.

Which brings us to this song in particular.

Highlights

I absolutely love the old-time rock’n’roll approach to the vocals during the verses. He does this thing where he puts vibrato on vowels in the middle of words which is a very Elvis way of doing it. Usually singers save vibrato for longer notes because oscillating pitch means you don’t have to be perfectly on pitch while sustaining the note.

Here, it’s being used to texture the lines and adds a playfulness to the phrases with how quickly slips in and out of his vibrato.

Which is actually how his vocals feel for a lot of this song. He has so much fun with how he switches between a mix and chest voice, darker and brighter sounds, playing with those vowels like it’s nothing. Some really awesome vocal work on this song, which I have a bit of a soft spot for.

This is definitely a headbanging song!

The drums are so quick and relentless once they kick in. Mix with that the distorted vocals and guitar and you have a song that rocks all the way through. With a nice, slowed down pre-chorus to let you catch your breath.

Low Points

I’ve said this before about other bands and songs but there is such thing as too much distortion, at least in my opinion, and having such prominent drums, distorted guitar and distorted vocals at times, it gets a little much and a lot of the nuances are lost. I find this especially disheartening given how much I enjoy the vocals but it can be difficult at times to fully hear them.

Rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This song has such a nice bounce to it and has this nice full sound that I think all rock music should have. Even when it strips back a bit during the verses it’s still going at such a fast speed that I always get caught up in it.

I’m super interested to listen to what else this artist has on their previous releases. I’ve listened to part of one EP already and I loved it!
