Who inspired you to make music?
When punk/new wave exploded it changed my perception on being able to make music, it was a just get up and give it a go attitude, and see where it goes. Minimal experience but it didn’t matter it was the ideas, the DIY approach got people involved with music who would not have thought of it before.
What is your creative process like?
We would start with a riff, just guitar and vocal, the riff would suggest a lyric and with a bit of jamming there would be an embryonic version of a song, not all these ideas would come to anything, but are kept for possible future use. Andy (guitarist/programming) would take these ideas away and come up with a basic backing track to then add more lyrics to and work out a structure, a lot of going back and forth from rehearsal to studio, until we would end up with a song we were happy with.
For the recent album ICON I drew a lot of lyrical ideas from the Warhol quote, ”everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes”, the idea of being famous for being famous, celebrity, idols, the new religion. Also sci-fi/film noir via Tarantino movies, would like to have a track on one of his movie soundtracks.
What do you feel is the best song you have released/written and why?
The one that gets the best reaction… don’t look at individual songs as they make more sense in context on an album and then as part of a body of work.
What is the best advice youve been given?
Take all advice onboard, but the final decisions are made you.
If you could be any kind of cookie, what would it be and why?
Would not want to be a cookie as you would have a very short life, especially choc chip at our house.
How do you feel the internet has impacted the music business?
I see it as another tool to promote what you are doing alongside more traditional routes, although there is a lot of noise there to be heard above, you have to be more selective as to who you are aiming your music at and focus on them initially otherwise it’s too overwhelming.
What is the most useless talent you have?
Surely then it’s not a talent.
When youre done with music, what do you want people to think when they talk about you and your work?
I will always be involved in something creative, what you have done will be perceived in many different ways especially when you are looking back from the future, it is always being re-examined, re-appraised… which leads nicely to the recent release…
