On your podcast and in your YouTube video, you talk about how The Crush was about evolving as a band and how much time went into actually creating this new sound. You’ve since even released The Crush 2.0 which further pushes the sound of the album. How do you think you have changed as a band since the beginnings of this album to reinventing it now?
I think the biggest change has been being more comfortable in our own skin. We’ve always attacked an album thinking “is this song cool? Does this work? Does this sound like us? What do we sound like?” And now we know what we want, how we can get it, and when it’s something we feel that fits us. What is that you ask? Well, we’ve just said Marina City is a feeling, not a genre. And if it feels good then we are going with it!! It’s more of an internal change.
You all come from a diverse background so how has this affected your musical influences?
We have struggled with wondering if this is an advantage or a disadvantage but again that’s why we feel we have changed so much in the last few years. We are confident it is an advantage and it makes us unique.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Success is when preparation meets opportunity
If you could be any kind of cookie, what would it be and why? (Most important question)
Chocolate Brownie M&M Cookie because you can be a bunch of cool things and good at all of them
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
Right now in the middle of this pandemic? The internet IS the music business. Without it, there wouldn’t be a business right now!
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
That it was based off of talent not because a funny meme went viral and we just sarcastically like something to be funny
What is the most useless talent you have?
I know a lot of baseball history/stat knowledge lol. No one cares….I never get a chance to talk to someone about it either…. lol
When you’re done with music, what do you want people to think when they talk about you and your work?
Marina City/My music positively impacted them. Maybe we challenged them in their way of thinking. Influenced them to try something, to not give up on what they love.
Given the current restrictions on travel and gatherings, what does the future hold for you as performers?
We’ve had to get super creative. Of course, you can do the live streams but that burned everyone out. So instead we made fake live videos in our bedrooms, music videos, and even showing up at people’s doors, ringing their doorbell, and playing 3 songs in their yard acoustically. I think Marina City is made up of some really creative people. I’m sure we will think of more ideas!
Are you currently writing new material for upcoming releases?
Oh yes. We are hoping for a new record out before 2020 ends. It’s about 2020 so hopefully we can get it done in time!
