Am I overly excited about this release? Yes, yes I am!
Okay, so this is a single from an upcoming album I’ve been waiting for with patience but great excitement. I’m a BIG fan of Dallon Weekes’ music throughout his different bands and Ryan Seaman is a wonderful pairing with him.
While this wasn’t a song I fell in love with right away like some of their previous releases, I did have it stuck in my head after the first listen.
Being the crazed fan girl that I am for this band, I like to think that I know Weekes’ singing style pretty well–or at least well enough that it won’t surprise me. Which is why I find it so infuriating that he a) has this crazy vocal run in this song and b) that he put it TWICE into the chorus so that he sings it multiple times throughout the song. It’s like he’s trying to make me frustrated with how much I love his voice by showing off.
The rhythm section on this song is, of course, super solid. Between the bass and drums there is no way someone can sit through this song without dancing–even if it’s just a little bit. But what I find most interesting about the instrumentation on this song compared to others is the use of space between the different elements. IDKHow has never had a clustered sound but they are definitely bombastic in their sound. This song holds back a bit more and takes advantage of using gaps and cutouts in the instruments to emphasize specific elements in the song.
I’m not going to go as far as to say that this is one of my favourite songs by this band but I’m also not going to pretend like I’m not already a huge fan. I knew that I was going to enjoy this song before I heard it just like I know I’m going to enjoy this album when it comes out in October.
I love that it still has the fun dance-vibes with the darker, tongue-and-cheek lyrics over top. And I will continue to listen to it because I can’t for the life of me get this song out of my head.
