Who inspired you to make music?
Music does, it just makes me feel good. It just gets inside me and I can’t stop it.
What is your creative process like? Do you start with lyrics? Instruments? Concept?
We’re deliberate and methodical in process. It’s a little dull, but we like exploring patterns in at least four dimensions, however you fold it. Dan writes every day and turns some into demos and we choose which ones to develop. We set up the kit and record some drums, maybe re-record some guitars and then add overdubs. In the before- times we would mix together in the shed but now we live on either side of the sleeve so I mix it at my home studio.
What do you feel is the best song you have released/written and why?
I think the best song on the new album “Self Theories” is “Weightless” and I hope we’ve done it justice. I want the Phil on it at Room 1. Some of the lines of that song feel like a hug.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Close isn’t the same.
If you could be any kind of cookie, what would it be and why? (Most important question)
Custard Cream with have of one side crumbled off at the bottom of your Nan’s tin. Lots of new people all the time, always a good tea party and I’d live forever because who eats a broken custard cream?
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
Prince was right. It is a powerful tool and a battle for hearts and souls is being fought with it. Artists need to get their music off streaming services like Spotify and let it be for just ambient music and podcasts. Move to Patreon or Bandcamp OR just make your own website. Daniel Ek makes more money than most of musicians combined. He makes the most money in the music industry. He can buy 1,000 Stevie Wonders and have money left over for a couple Michael Jacksons. Why are we giving him our art for basically free?
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
The vending machines need Peanut Snickers.
What is the most useless talent you have?
It’s a rock, paper, scissors game between playing the hand ocarina, solving a rubik’s cube or picking locks.
When you’re done with music, what do you want people to think when they talk about you and your work?
I want them to be too busy crying or dancing to be thinking.
What is your most recent project/upcoming project?
Our new album “Self-Theories” is out on the 23rd of November. It is an album about despair and hope, anxiety and optimism, lack of self-esteem and active search for it, maladies of the modern world, our responsibilities and reinventing ourselves for the sake of a brighter future.
