Poison Oak [Musician Interview]

Posted by

Who inspired you to make music?

I guess in the end it was my friends who got me into writing music. However, now, life experiences and uses this as a way to express emotion, I guess is an inspiration for writing music. However, artistically I would say Australian artists such as Bernard Fanning, Paul Kelly, Gang of Youths, Violent Soho and the Whitlams.

What is your creative process like? Do you start with lyrics? Instruments? Concept?

A combination of everything. It really depends, sometimes it starts as a jam with the band, or I will bring the structure of a whole song or just an idea, or Ray might come in with an idea or a riff. We don’t really have a particular formula, we just go in with what works.

What do you feel is the best song you have released/written and why?

A Little Time, I believe it is the best song lyrically. I think for myself a judge a song on the lyrics and how well it is written and paints a picture. But obviously people view songs and judge them differently as well.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Have no ego, it will get you further than you expect.

If you could be any kind of cookie, what would it be and why? (Most important question)

A stock standard Orio, because they’re just straight up tasty.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

Yeah, it definitely has had negative and positive effects. I think it has damaged the live industry and cheapen the process of creating or buying a record. However, it has made music more accessible to people. So, yeah… but in all honesty I’m not much of fan, but it’s the world we live in now.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

The only way you could purchase/obtain music is by getting the physical record.

What is the most useless talent you have?

I’m pretty decent at playing Age of Empires II.

When you’re done with music, what do you want people to think when they talk about you and your work?

I hope to be never done with music, I don’t really see it as this object goal I have to achieve and once I have achieved that I’m done. It’s a hobby just like sport and or riding my bike. It’s kind of like an old friend who never really changes.

What is your most recent project/upcoming project?

We are about to release our next single “Sarah”, on the 19th of February and as well as our six tack EP “1996”, on the 19th of March.
