Pressure [Musician Interview]

Posted by

Who inspired you to make music?

If you ask me Olof (lead singer) it was actually Simon. When I joined the band, I didn’t feel that I wanted to write my own music. I thought there are already a lot of very good songwriters out there and I didn’t think I had any important messages. It is still Simon that comes up with almost all the basic ideas (he is like a machine). Sometimes I come up with a topic, tell Simon and a few hours later I will get a message with draft for lyrics for a song…

BUT when you start to write your/our own music, it’s hard to stop…

What is your creative process like? Do you start with lyrics? Instruments? Concept?

Normally Simon has an idea, for lyrics riffs and melodies. He records all instruments, vocals and give his idea to Olof that take a critical look at it, Olof re-records it with his vocals, and pretty often changing the key, lyrics and parts of the melody. (Sometimes almost no changes at all) After that we all start recording together, setting harmonies, take it home and listen to it. Comes up with more ideas/changes, rerecord it. Take it home listen to it… And after a few rounds when we feel, we can’t do it better than this, we record the “final version” and send it to our fantastic producers for mixing and mastering.

What do you feel is the best song you have released/written and why?

That changes depending what day it it;-) But I always come back to “Osårbar” (released song) “Komm Her” (A not yet released song in German) and “Ännu Mer” (released song).

I like “Osårbar” less is more.

“Komm Heir” is really heavy but melodic sound

“Ännu Mer” have a killer riff

All of them have a good message.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

The more you understand, the more understand that you don’t understand.

If you could be any kind of cookie, what would it be and why? (Most important question)

A chocolate chip cookie, but replace the chocolate with really salty and peppery licorice. Why? One reason is that I am Swedish, and we love slated licorice. And think I’m a little bit like the combination, salty, peppery, but pretty sweet.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

Both good and bad, as “new” things normally do. There is always a good side and a bad side. The good thing is that almost anybody who wants to make music and get it out on the streaming services can do it. Another good thing now when Corona is all around, we are able to do live streams, and have contact with our fans through social media. (Even though you can really compare a live stream with a real live gig!!)

The bad thing is, it’s really hard to break thorough the noise, there are thousands of songs released on Spotify every day. What make you unique? And is it enough to break though the noise?

Another bad thing is, people don’t buy albums anymore.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

Stop with the “wear and tear” business. Where you find young people who look good, make as much money you can on them as fast as possible for a short time. Especially if there is no real soul attachment to the music, they perform

What is the most useless talent you have?

I can imitate a toad/frog sound

When you’re done with music, what do you want people to think when they talk about you and your work?

I hope our music would have had an impact on everyday people and maybe helped them through tuff times in their life. Of cause I also hope the felt a good Pressure when the listened to us. And hopefully people will say, “well, wasn’t it Pressure that started “story Metal?””

What is your most recent project/upcoming project?

We will release an album in the end of April / beginning of May. And we will release a German EP after summer. IF corona will calm down, we want to go to the live stage.
